Bristol wildlife control Tip of the Month:
Will a High Pitch Sound Deterrent Machine Work Against Snakes?
A lot has been said when it comes to snake deterrence. However, some of the information is misleading and peddled around for the sake of making high sales. But since snakes are scary animals to have around, you'd do anything you can to get them out of your property or yard as soon as you can. While there are many ways of deterring snakes from setting up nests in your home and reproducing in large numbers, not everything you come across works as it's portrayed. Instead, some turn out to be a hoax meant to drive sales. So, forget about the ads! And let's get to reality.
While high pitch sound might work for other types of animals with sharp auditory senses, it might not be useful for repelling snakes. High pitch devices seem like an incredible idea for keeping snakes out of your home or property, but do they really work?
The hidden truth behind the high pitch sound emitting devices
High pitch sound emitting devices were invented with the idea that most wild animals have highly sensitive auditory senses. As such, they can detect high-pitched sounds from a distance and keep away due to the irritating effect of the noise. Besides that, the companies behind the high-pitched sound emitting devices claim that the high pitch sound emanating from the devices will remain unnoticed by humans despite causing unrest to wild animals. However, all these claims are not true.
And here's why.
Unlike rodents, such as rats and mice, which have powerful auditory senses, snakes have poor auditory senses. But instead, they have a more robust sense of touch that makes them highly sensitive to any movement. Perhaps that's what makes them deadly and tactful.
Snakes have a finely-honed sensory apparatus that helps them to transmit vibrations from a distance through their jawbones. Through that, snakes can locate their prey's position, thereby making them capture their prey with astonishing accuracy. Besides that, snakes also rely on vision, though not as sharp as that of humans. Not to mention, snakes also have incredible chemical sensing organs that send chemical information concerning prey or invaders, making them efficient hunters.
Apart from that, snakes also lack eardrums, making them not vulnerable to high-pitched sound that is meant to irritate an animal's eardrum. Instead, they have inner auditory structures, including cochlea. Snake jaws can move independently, depending on the direction of the sound. As such, snakes can easily ignore the high pitch sound emitted by the sonic devices.
Based on research, snakes are capable of moving swiftly away from discomfort. As such, they can move from the direction of a high-pitched sound at a speed of about 50m per second. This helps it change direction and avoid the sharp sound if it becomes too much for it. Therefore, if you were to use the sonic deterrent, then you'll need many of the devices spread throughout your property at a closer interval to keep the entire yard covered. While that would make a bit of sense, it would be extremely expensive to implement.
So, will the sonic sound really deter snakes? The answer is NO! Even though snakes can feel the high-pitched sound, it isn’t irritating enough to annoy a snake to leave your home or property. Therefore, you shouldn't waste your time and money. Perhaps, you can try out other snake repellants that are tried and tested for their effectiveness.
